Bluetit Diary 2005 - March (12)

Saturday 19th March (cont)

9:43:16 The birds circle each other uneasily.  The newcomer is the bird on the bottom right of this picture.  The question is - what sex is this bird?

From the image we saw outside with its wide white head band, we thought it must be a male.  Now it is inside and we can observe it more closely, it could be of either sex.

9:43:18 The circling continues.  The newcomer is now at the top of the picture and the original male, who is looking more aggressive each second, is at the bottom.

9:43:19 Suddenly, the newcomer turns its back on the male.  Not the thing to do if you are about to have a fight!

However, if you are a female,  ...?

9:43:20 Here she (its now clear that fighting is the last thing on this bird's mind) turns a bit more and the male rears up over her.
