Bluetit Diary    Mar 2006 (1)

Tuesday 7th March, 2006

The cold weather continues.  Even though most days recently have been bright and sunny, they are too cold for our birds to take too much interest in nesting.

Although there seems to be a pair which have taken ownership of box2, box1's future occupants are still to be determined.  This morning it became clear that the great tit was still interested in using it as a nesting site, and perhaps there is more than one bluetit in contention too!

At 8.15 this morning, I noticed a great tit expressing interest in box1.

No sooner had it taken a look but that a bluetit came rushing to the entrance hole.

A short while later, that bird flew but a few seconds later it  was back - or was it another bird?

It certainly didn't behave as though it was the current owner.  This shot shows it taking a rather tentative peek into the box.

It then jumped up to the entrance hole and I thought it was going inside.

But suddenly, it turned away as though it had heard something.  A second later, it was gone.

About 45 minutes later, we had another visit from the great tit.  It took up an almost identical pose to last time in order to see inside the nest box.

"What's that?" Suddenly, it looked up and then flew off.

This bluetit seems to think the box is his property.

Or is it?  He in his turn appeared to be chased off!

Another purposeful bird bird appeared.

After all this fuss though, we still haven't had a bird going inside today!
