Bluetit Diary    Apr 2008 (4)

Thursday 10th April, 2008

Abby and Angus had a bit of a shock today!

Abby is still making very slow progress with her nest.  She still seems to be taking stuff out as well as bringing it it!

Bringing it in this time.

But what's this?  Can't this great tit see that the box is occupied?

He certainly seems to be taking a good look ...

... and he's discovered that the hole is big enough for a great tit too!

This could be serious for Abby and Angus.  If this great tit really wants the box there's no way the bluetits can stop him.  Look at what has happened in Box1!

I might even have to consider putting my bluetit sized plate on this box's entrance hole.

Here come the marines!  I presume this is Angus coming to try to protect his property!

Is this Angus at the nest box's entrance?  The bluetit doesn't seem to have much of a head crest and I would have expected a male's head feathers to be standing up in these circumstances.

Not much doubt about the bluetit's sex from this viewpoint.  You can see that the feathers around his neck are fluffed up as he tries to look as threatening as he can.

"Where's the way out!"  Angus's behaviour seems to be having the desired effect on the great tit!

The great tit has to force his way past Angus as he escapes.

Angus seems to have been knocked away as the great tit flies off.  Or is this Angus?

Fifteen seconds later a bluetit is back.

This looks like Abby and she is naturally taking some time to go back inside.

Things get back to normal pretty quickly in the bluetit world.  A minute later and she is back to nest building!
