Bluetit Diary    May 2026 (3)

Sunday 3rd May 2026

This is the best picture so far showing all 9 chicks begging for food.  I hope there is enough food around for them.  I have stopped feeding the birds following the episode a few years ago when some chicks were killed as a result of them being fed fat by their parents from the fat blocks I had put out.

A more subdued picture of all nine chicks.

Here you can see how the chicks' feathers are developing.  At the moment all they have are the pins upon which the feathers will grow.  Within two weeks the feathers will have grown enough for the chicks to fly!

One of the parents with food.  A little green caterpillar.

This year I have seen many more spiders than usual being fed to the chicks.  I wonder if there is a shortage of caterpillars, or just that GTs use spiders as food more than bluetits do.
